My work addresses the effects of pollution that is in many of our water systems. Toxic chemicals and industrial waste contaminate streams, lakes, bays and oceans. The “Troubled Waters” paintings reflect this conflict between the laws of nature and our attempts to artificially control the environment. Patterns of gaskets and other mechanical shapes are incorporated into the paintings, representing herbicides, pesticides, rainwater run-off and other unnatural substances that seep into groundwater. Debris crowds the marine environment. Fish mutate into imaginary forms. A change is taking place as nature reacts to this disruption.

Whether we stop pollution or not, nature will evolve in some way. My vision depicts fish and other marine life not only in the sea but in the sky; a total reversal of the natural order.

Other Worlds II
2013
acrylic on canvas
40" x 48"

Other Worlds II suggests that the marine environment will adapt somehow to this influx of chemical and toxic substances. Perhaps water will become different from what we know, as a result of our interference with the natural state of the environment.
